Salary, Benefits & Perks

Residents in the Madison Family Medicine Residency Program are employees of the University of Wisconsin–Madison and receive a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Compensation and benefits are consistent with UW Health residency programs and are designed to support residents throughout their training. 

Salary

Residents are paid on a graduated scale based on postgraduate year: 

  • PGY1: $70,685 
  • PGY2: $73,395  
  • PGY3: $76,745  

Salaries include a well-being stipend and are reviewed annually in accordance with university and institutional guidelines. 

Professional Development and Education Support 

The program provides robust support for professional growth, including:  

  • Paid membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP)  
  • Paid osteopathic memberships for eligible residents (AOA, ACOFP, WAOPS)  
  • $1,000 per year in professional development funding for conferences, books, and other approved educational expenses  
  • Coverage of required board examination fees in the final year of training  
  • Paid time and support for life-support certifications, including ACLS, PALS, NRP, and ALSO, as applicable  

Time Away and Leave

Residents receive paid time away to support rest, health, and personal needs: 

  • Paid vacation and personal days, with additional time after the first year 
  • Paid holidays, as clinical schedules permit 
  • Additional paid professional development days for conferences and educational activities 
  • Parental, medical, and family leave in compliance with institutional and federal guidelines, coordinated through program leadership 

Insurance and Financial Benefits

Residents have access to a comprehensive benefits package, including: 

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance for residents and eligible dependents 
  • Life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and AD&D coverage 
  • Medical malpractice and professional liability coverage 
  • Pre-tax flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care expenses 
  • Optional participation in a university-administered retirement plan with immediate vesting 

Meals, Parking, and On-Site Resources

The program benefits from strong institutional support at its primary and partner hospitals: 

  • Complimentary parking or parking reimbursement at all training sites, including SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, UW Health University Hospital, American Family Children’s Hospital, and UnityPoint Health–Meriter Hospital  
  • Access to the Physician Resource Center at St. Mary’s, open to all physicians and offering complimentary meals and refreshments  
  • Meal cards for hospital cafeterias and coffee shops, with generous allowances while on service  
  • A $500 annual wellness stipend for food and beverages at UW Health University Hospital and UnityPoint Health–Meriter Hospital 

Resident Support and Wellness

Resident well-being is a program priority and is supported through: 

  • Access to confidential counseling and support services 
  • Program-supported wellness activities, retreats, and community-building events 
  • Meals provided during conferences and educational sessions 
  • Pagers provided at no cost during residency 
  • Facilitated access to primary care, with family medicine clinicians expanding their panels to ensure residents can establish care with a primary care provider
