Information for Applicants
Applying & Interviewing
The Madison Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program based at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, a community teaching hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. The program is academically sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, allowing residents to train in a community-focused setting while benefiting from the academic resources, faculty, and educational oversight of a large academic institution. Graduates of the program are eligible for board certification in family medicine.
Number of Positions
Sixteen residency positions are available on a competitive basis for the 2027 Match cycle.
How to Apply
Applications will be accepted through October 31, 2026. We accept applications only via Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or otherwise authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. We are unable to sponsor or accept applicants requiring J-1, H-1B, or other employment visas.
Interviews
Interviews will be conducted virtually from October through December. Selected applicants will be notified through ERAS.
Applications are reviewed holistically using the AAMC Experiences, Attributes, Competencies, and Metrics (EACM) framework, with consideration given to applicants’ experiences, personal attributes, demonstrated competencies, academic metrics, personal statements, and letters of recommendation.
Guided by this framework, the program values applicants whose backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences strengthen our learning environment and the communities we serve. We recognize and respect the many ways individual paths, life experiences, and viewpoints contribute to collaboration, education, and patient care at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Second Look Opportunities
During this Match cycle, the program will offer several optional second look opportunities, including both in-person and virtual experiences. These opportunities give applicants additional insight into the program and allow time to interact with residents, faculty, and staff. Those attending in person can explore the Madison community.
Participation in the optional second look has no impact on an applicant’s position on the rank list. Additional details will be shared with applicants following the interview season.
International Medical Graduates
The program welcomes applications from International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are United States citizens or permanent residents. At this time, the program is not able to sponsor visas. IMGs must hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
All residents must meet University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health credentialing requirements and conditions of employment.
