Michael Chen, MD, FAAFP, Awarded ICTR Pilot Award

Michael Chen, MD, FAAFP, and co-investigator Heather Barkholtz, PhD, were awarded a University of Wisconsin–Madison Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) Pilot Award for their project, “Impact of GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Therapy on Alcohol Pharmacokinetics.” This study will characterize how individuals with obesity receiving a maintenance-dose of GLP-1 process alcohol over time and explore links to intoxication and impairment outcomes.
Chen is a board-certified family physician who strives to provide quality care and an exceptional patient experience. He is past president of the Utah Academy of Family Physicians and currently serves on the boards of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians and the Dane County Medical Society.
The ICTR Pilot Awards Program supports ICTR’s goal of fostering the development of investigator-initiated research that promotes health for all. The project has funded and administered 488 projects totaling $28M in support since its founding in 2008.
The UW–Madison Institute for Clinical and Translational Research provides training, funding, and services to help clinical and translational researchers grow their careers and increase impact. ICTR is based at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and represents a partnership between the medical school and the UW–Madison Schools of Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine, the College of Engineering, and the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute.
