Turning the uncertainty of complex transitions into a journey of shared dignity and clinical clarity.

Driving Connections Lab

The Driving Connections Lab engages in rigorous participatory research with the goal of supporting primary care teams to leverage cultural humility and shared decision-making to help patients, families, and communities prioritize and navigate what matters most during complex life transitions.

Core questions that guide our research are:

  • How do we measure what matters when caring for people facing complex medical conditions?
  • How can we implement effective programs that make it easier for primary care teams to deliver the right care at the right time?
  • How can we balance standardizing evidence-based care and allowing for variability in personalizing care to individual patients’ needs and contexts?

Our work currently focuses on supporting patients with dementia and their care partners to navigate the transition of stopping driving. Team-based approaches seek to meet patients where they are as their dementia progresses.

Meaningful change in dementia care is a team effort. We invite clinicians, researchers, and community members to join us in bridging the gap between clinical research and the lived experiences of those we serve.

Driving and Dementia

Engaging Patients with Dementia and Their Care Partners in Decisions about the Transition to Non-Driving

This pilot project engages a diverse cohort of older drivers with dementia, care partners, and clinical team members to co-design a study that will investigate the adaptation and implementation of a driving care planning intervention.

This project is funded by the University of Wisconsin Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
