Bio

Randall Brown, MD, PhD, DFASAM (he/him/his) is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. Throughout his career, Brown has maintained a passion for serving people marginalized by society. He has focused specifically upon enhancing prevention and treatment services for people who use drugs and who use alcohol in unhealthy ways. Brown sees patients, teaches health professionals, and conducts research in this area.

He founded the University of Wisconsin’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program and a number of innovative multi-disciplinary clinical services in this space. He has conducted and collaborated on numerous research studies (over 80 peer-reviewed publications) that aim to improve health care and community-based services to people who use.

Clinical Interests

Brown is interested in providing compassionate, competent care to and fostering well-being for people who use drugs and alcohol. He is passionate about improving care in this space in general medical settings (primary care, hospital) and community-based settings such as syringe service programs, peer recovery, and criminal justice.

Research Interests

Brown’s research interests include:

  • Health services research in the addictions
  • System interventions to improve care for people who use
  • Mobile health to support harm reduction and recovery services
  • Clinical trials of psychedelic compounds in the setting of substance use disorders and related conditions
  • Provider education in primary care and hospital settings to improve care to people who use

Teaching Interests

Brown enjoys working with learners in the context of providing care for people with substance use disorders and related conditions. He also provides lectures and delivers care-based learning in this area.
