About Us

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

We are one of the original 15 family medicine residency programs. Since our founding in 1970, we have established the Wisconsin Research and Education Network, developed the first Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics course, created cutting-edge fellowships, and been ranked among the top family medicine residency programs in the nation.

Our department is deeply committed to transforming health care for all. With a focus on salutogenic science (the origins of health), we ask our community “What do you want your health for?” and support them by:

• Educating the next generation of family medicine physicians to provide primary care for the people of Wisconsin and beyond.
• Conducting innovative primary care research that improves the education, health care, and community outreach we deliver.
• Providing remarkable health care at 18 clinics across south-central Wisconsin.
• Strengthening personal and community health by working alongside communities to create a future where everyone can thrive and live well.
• Using the principles of integrative health and participatory medicine to serve those on the path to their greatest well-being.
