
Rural Family Medicine Obstetrics (FMOB) Fellowship
The Rural Family Medicine Obstetrics (FMOB) fellowship is a 24-month program providing surgical training and high-risk obstetrical experience for family physicians planning to care for a rural population.
Family physicians have the opportunity to enhance their clinical, teaching, scholarly, and leadership skills in obstetrics.
The fellowship is based in the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health and collaborates closely with the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and multiple rural hospitals.

Eligibility Requirements
You must:
- Hold an MD or DO degree.
- Complete residency in family medicine. You may apply while completing your final year of residency.
- Be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent U.S. resident with a resident alien permit or green card. The Rural FMOB fellowship does not sponsor J-1 or other visas.

- Vaginal deliveries
- C-sections
- Vacuum-assisted deliveries
- Third-degree perineal laceration repair
- Fourth-degree perineal laceration repair
- IUD placement/removal
- Endometrial biopsies
- D&Cs
- Prenatal ultrasound
- Colposcopy
- Optional: you may also include upcoming rotations, electives, or professional development that may prepare you for fellowship training.

- Have your letter writers – or a third party, such as a program coordinator – send three letters of recommendation directly to Fellowship Coordinator Jenny White (jennifer.white@fammed.wisc.edu). One must be from your current program director (or current supervisor if in practice).

As part of the new Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship Directors Association (FMOB-FDA), we will open applications on July 1.
While we may make and accept offers at any time, you are not required to make a decision on an offer before October 15.
Our goal is that candidates will be able to choose their preferred program, which benefits all our member programs.
Curriculum Highlights
- Clinical
- OB and maternal fetal medicine (MFM) rotations at a high-volume hospital in Madison, including vaginal deliveries, vacuum-assisted deliveries, c-sections, prenatal ultrasounds, D&Cs, and tubal ligations
- Block and longitudinal OB rural rotations
- NICU rotation and post-resuscitation/pre-transport (i.e. STABLE Program)
- Family medicine clinic at rural site (Belleville)
- Electives based on your interest and future practice (e.g. addiction medicine, lactation, hospital medicine)
- Teaching
- Precept family medicine residents at rural clinic
- Co-attend on inpatient family medicine service and family medicine obstetrics and newborn service (FMONS)
- Teach case-based didactics for family medicine residents on FMONS
- Become and participate as Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor
