Academic Fellowship

The University of Wisconsin Academic Fellowship is an opportunity for family physicians to enhance their teaching, clinical, scholarly, and leadership skills. The one-year program is designed to give each adult learner access to a variety of educational and professional experiences that align with their interests and career goals.

You must:

Be a board-eligible or board-certified family physician who will have completed a family medicine residency by the start of the fellowship.

Application Process

Review eligibility requirements and submit the following materials via email to Fellowship Director Jessica Dalby, MD, (jessica.dalby@fammed.wisc.edu) and Fellowship Coordinator Christina Swords (christina.swords@fammed.wisc.edu).
- Curriculum vitae 
- A statement describing your interest in the academic fellowship, your areas of interest within family medicine, and your current career goals 
- One letter of recommendation sent directly from author to the fellowship director and coordinator  
After your written materials are received, an interview will be scheduled with the academic program director. Your acceptance will be subject to approval from the residency program director and the academic fellowship program director.

Curriculum Highlights

Clinical
- Provide care for continuity patients in a family medicine clinic four half-days each week. 
- Attend on the inpatient teaching services at the University of Wisconsin, St. Mary’s, and Meriter Hospitals with the guidance of a faculty mentor. 
- Participate in limited attending call one to two times per month for obstetric and/or medicine/pediatrics. 
- Work with a University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) faculty member to strengthen clinical skills in an area of interest.
Teaching
- Precept resident physician care in a family medicine clinic one half-day each week.
- Work with medical students in clinic occasionally. 
- Teach resident physicians in DFMCH by participating in the residency seminar series, the residency clinical competency committee, and resident evaluation sessions. 
- Teach clinical skills to medical students in a small group setting for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
- Enroll in adult learning courses through the UW Interprofessional Continuing Education Partnership Clinical Teacher Learning Community. 
Scholarly Opportunities
- Meet with your fellowship director or mentor committee to review educational plan and progress once a month. 
- Participate in fellowship seminars covering basic principles of teaching and scholarly work.
- Design and implement a presentable, publishable scholarly project with assistance from your mentor committee. Projects may include research addressing a clinical or educational question, curriculum design and/or evaluation, or the use of innovative teaching methods. 
- Attend professional meetings which may include but are not limited to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Leadership/Community
- Pursue advocacy interests through various DFMCH programs supporting our communities.
- Participate in health policy activities through the American Association of Family Physicians Policy Center and other programs. 
- Learn about leadership through involvement with academic or physician organizations like STFM, the state and county medical society, and AAFP.
