Funding is available from a variety of sources to help students attend the AAFP National Conference. In order to maximize availability of these funds, we advise students apply for funds in this sequence:
To apply everyone must complete and submit the steps below:
Step 1: Apply to: AAFP Leads Scholarship
Step 2: Apply to: Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians Scholarship (contact WAFP for a scholarship application).
- Students should apply to BOTH scholarships to increase the chances of receiving funding (students will only receive funds from AAFP or WAFP, however).
- Deadline for applications: typically around the end of April
- Notification Date: typically first week of June
Step 3: After you receive notification from AAFP and WAFP, contact the UW Department of Family Medicine Interest Group Coordinator to see if there is additional funding available to help offset costs of attending the conference.
Post-conference requirements:
- A paragraph highlighting your conference experience and the impact on your education and specialty selection.

AAFP Scholarship Information
- The number of scholarships in each category varies from year to year depending on the funding level and the number of applicants.
- Scholarship recipients are selected by a panel of judges.
- The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference.
- All scholarship checks from the AAFP are awarded at National Conference. If you are unable to attend the Conference, your scholarship will be forfeited.
WAFP
- Typically, funding is available for 25 scholarships.
- Scholarship recipients are selected by the members of the WAFP.
- The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference.
- All scholarships from the WAFP are awarded following verification of attendance at the AAFP National Conference. If you are unable to attend the Conference, your scholarship will be forfeited.
- You must apply for both AAFP and WAFP scholarships. You will only receive one and WAFP will announce their recipients after AAFP sends their notifications of recipients.
DFMCH
- If you do not receive a scholarship from the AAFP or WAFP you are eligible for up to $1000 from the department of Family Medicine.
- If you did receive a scholarship from the WAFP or AAFP you are eligible for up to $400 in additional support.
- You will need to fill out the Brillman form.
- This scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference.
- All scholarships from DFMCH are awarded following verification of attendance at the AAFP National Conference. If you are unable to attend the Conference, your scholarship will be forfeited.
- You must apply for both AAFP and WAFP scholarships. Once the AAFP and WAFP announce their winners, the department will notify students who will receive funds from DFMCH.
Eligibility Requirements
- You must be a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to apply. Membership is free for medical students
- All scholarship recipients must submit a reflection statement following attendance at the AAFP National Conference to Nicole Watson nicole.watson@fammed.wisc.edu . This is due by the Friday following the conference.
