Congratulations to Samantha Barbour (M4 Student) and Elizabeth Fleming, MD (Assistant Professor, CHS) on having their research article, “Using the Electronic Health Record to Facilitate Patient Physician Relationship While Establishing Care,” published in the September/October 2024 issue of Annals of Family Medicine.

To strengthen the patient-physician relationship, patients were invited to share personal narratives before their first visit with a new primary care physician via patient portal. Patients were asked to describe what they wanted their health care team to know about them as a person. Most patients responded positively, with some sharing deeply personal information that might not have been uncovered during a typical clinical encounter. Fleming reported that these narratives fostered a stronger connection with patients and led to more effective agenda setting and improved efficiency for the visit.

This article is a result of a Summer Student Research and Clinical Assistantship (SSRCA) project conducted in 2022. University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health students work with family medicine faculty on people-oriented, clinically relevant, hands-on research and quality improvement projects.

Annals of Family Medicine is an open access, peer-reviewed research journal dedicated to advancing knowledge essential to understanding and improving health and primary care and supports a learning community of those who generate and use information about health and generalist health care.
