Bio
Joseph Schmidt, BS, MEd (he/him/his) joined the Osher Center for Integrative Health in 2024 where he hopes to aid in improving whole-person and whole-community health, making it more accessible and equitable to all people.
Schmidt joined Teach for America after graduating from the University of Wisconsin and worked in Milwaukee Public Schools as a high school science teacher. After his third year of teaching, he earned a fellowship through Princeton in Africa where he taught middle school science in Gaborone, Botswana. Schmidt stayed with the school for years following his fellowship and eventually returned to America to teach high school science in Balsam Lake, WI.
With a decade of teaching experience in urban, rural, and international settings, Schmidt is happy to return to the University of Wisconsin to start his next chapter in healthcare.
Research Interests
Schmidt’s research interests include preclinical drug development of small molecule therapeutics for castrate-resistant prostate cancer (UW Carbone Cancer Center) and the role of sex education in HIV-positive children and adolescents in Kenya to reduce stigma and transmission.
