James was born and raised in Madison, WI and attended the University of Notre Dame to study business administration. After working in Chicago and later at Epic as a financial analyst, he earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. While in medical school, James volunteered at free clinics and with community outreach groups that serve unsheltered women and men. He was drawn to family medicine by its focus on longitudinal relationships and breadth of practice including care of all ages. His professional interests include hospital medicine, street medicine, medical ethics, and health care economics. Outside of medicine, James enjoys spending time with family and friends, staying active, brewing coffee, fishing, and camping.
