Bill Schwab, MD – Interim Chair, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health

Welcome to the DFMCH’s FY21 annual report, a summary of our faculty and staff activities from July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021. Our faculty and staff are extraordinary, and we have a lot to be proud of this year!

In FY21, we provided care for 338,728 patient visits (198,258 total patient panel) in our 17 statewide clinics. We continued to improve patient care quality by expanding telehealth visits, continuing resident well-being and resilience initiatives and improving behavioral health access.

We continue our commitment to educating primary care providers for Wisconsin.

  • Of the 52 residents in our sponsored and academic partner programs who graduated in 2021, 32 (62%) entered practice or fellowship in-state.
  • We ranked 6th in family medicine residency programs in US News and World Report.
  • We taught 422 UW School of Medicine and Public Health students.

In addition, our researchers received $7.9 million in grant awards in FY21. Their work focuses on preventing and treating addiction and substance misuse, conducting surveillance for infectious diseases and implementing systems-engineering approaches for improving ambulatory care.

I’m grateful to all of our faculty and staff for their skill and dedication: our work depends on you! Over the next year, we look forward to building on our educational partnerships, further improving how we care for patients, strengthening our research program and expanding our community health efforts. Because health lives here, in Wisconsin.
