Congratulations to Andrea Kratzke Nelson, MD (Postgraduate Trainee 3) on being awarded the 30th Annual Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative Monato Essay Prize for her piece “Bulls and Hippos: Listening to Rural Voices in Healthcare.” Nelson’s essay reflects on her transition from urban to rural communities, the disconnect between, and how global health principles informed her approach to listening to the needs of both her patients and the healthcare providers around her.
Says Nelson, “In order for rural healthcare to improve and thrive we need to encourage rural voices to be heard, both in personal, educational, and political spheres. That means actively creating space for it to be heard like we do in other areas of diversity interactions.”
The Monato Essay Prize was established in 1993 to highlight the importance of rural health and to honor the memory of Hermes Monato, Jr., a 1990 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Essays are evaluated by a review committee seeking attributes such as relevance to rural communities, innovation, and improvement of quality of care, among others.
