Congratulations to Yohualli B. Anaya, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, CHS) and Sarina Schrager, MD, MS (Professor, CHS) on having their research article, “Shared Decision Making Among Racially and/or Ethnically Diverse Populations in Primary Care: A Scoping Review of Barriers and Facilitators,” published in the March/April 2025 issue of Annals of Family Medicine. Anaya and Schrager were joined by University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health colleagues Diana Do and Leslie Christensen, MA-LIS for this study.

Making health care decisions together is an important part of patient-centered care, but racial and ethnic minority patients often face barriers to quality shared decision making. Anaya and Schrager’s study examined existing research to identify barriers and facilitators influencing shared decision making in primary care settings for diverse patient populations and found key factors affecting shared decision making before, during, and after clinical visits. They found that many barriers are modifiable and that equitable patient-centered care can be promoted by strengthening language and cultural congruence, addressing discrimination, ensuring adequate time for shared decision-making discussions, and incorporating family input when appropriate. These efforts can promote equitable patient-centered care.

Annals of Family Medicine is an open access, peer-reviewed research journal dedicated to advancing knowledge essential to understanding and improving health and primary care and supports a learning community of those who generate and use information about health and generalist health care.
