Jonathan L. Temte, MD, PhD; Shari Barlow; and Marlon Mundt, PhD
Congratulations to Jonathan L. Temte, MD, PhD (Professor, CHS), Shari Barlow (Research Program Manager), and Marlon Mundt, PhD (Professor) on being awarded the 2025 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Research Paper of the Year! Former DFMCH colleagues Mary Checovich and Irene Hamrick also served as essential members of the research team.
The paper, “Rapid Detection of Influenza Outbreaks in Long-Term Care Facilities Reduces Emergency Room Visits and Hospitalization: A Randomized Trial,” was chosen for the quality of research and its potential impact. The study was published in the Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association and assessed whether using rapid influenza diagnostic tests for long-term care facility residents was associated with increased antiviral use and decreased emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and length of hospital stays.
The paper will be acknowledged at the 2025 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Spring Conference awards ceremony on May 4, 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The article abstract will be displayed during the conference’s poster sessions.
STFM’s mission is to advance family medicine to improve health through a community of teachers and scholars. It is a national community of academic leaders involved in the education of family physicians.
