Congratulations to the UW Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Office of Community Health for being featured at the 2024 Wisconsin Public Health Association Conference. The conference takes place May 21-23 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

A poster by Sarah Hohl, PhD (Research Scientist III), Savanna Kiefer, MPH (Research Intern), Hazel Behling (Health Equity Coordinator), and Shelly Shaw, MPH (Director, DFMCH Office of Community Health), “Addressing Social Determinants to Advance Health Equity in Rural Wisconsin: Perspectives of Communities, Family Medicine Physicians, and University Groups,” focuses on a qualitative assessment conducted by the Office of Community Health. The assessment aimed to identify priority health concerns and their determinants, strengths for and challenges to addressing health and its determinants, and the role of the University and the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in addressing rural health equity. This work was funded in part by a DFMCH small grant.

Shaw will also present a workshop called “IRL Conversations – Moving Beyond ‘the Weather’: Piloting Deliberative Dialogue to Foster a Shared Understanding of Health Equity Among Rural Community Decision Makers and Residents.” The workshop addresses a pilot project to convene deliberative dialogue sessions in three Wisconsin counties focused on how to achieve a healthy community for all.

The Wisconsin Public Health Association’s mission is to build collective action to address root causes and advance public health policy and practice with a vision for a healthier, safer, and more equitable Wisconsin.
