Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin (UW) Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) Primary Care Research Fellowship on receiving its annual renewal of the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Institutional Research Training Grant (NRSA) T32 grant. The grant, in year three of five, was renewed for $500,000; the total award over five years is $2.5 million. Administered by DFMCH, the primary care research fellowship provides mentored research training for up to six individuals annually for careers in primary care medical research at academic medical institutions. The fellowship is led by Earlise Ward, PhD, MS (Professor), Bruce Barrett, MD, PhD (Professor), Elizabeth Cox, MD, PhD (Professor, UW Department of Pediatrics), David Feldstein, MD (Professor, UW Department of Medicine), and coordinated by Christina Swords.

The Primary Care Research Fellowship is among the oldest, most successful primary care research fellowships in the nation. Since 1993, the fellowship has trained more than 60 post-doctoral fellows. Fellows acquire core skills including grant and manuscript preparation, research conduct, relationship development and collaboration, and research ethics in this mentored research training program. The outstanding 2023 cohort includes Asma Ali, PharmD, PhD; Miena Hall, MD, IBCLC; David Mallinson, PhD; and Laura Prieto, PhD.
The HRSA NRSA T32 grant’s main goal is to train primary care physicians and PhD scientists interested in careers in medical research related to the organization, delivery, or effectiveness of primary health care and preventive medicine. It supports protected time for early career researchers to gain valuable skills such as publication and grant writing and opportunities such as presenting at conferences and taking courses towards advanced degrees.
