Congratulations to Earlise Ward, PhD, MS (Professor) on being awarded a $50,000 grant supported by the University of Wisconsin Head and Neck SPORE Developmental Research Program. Ward’s project, “IONA Mind Mobile Mental Health Treatment App for HNC Patients and Survivors with Depression and/or Anxiety,” is funded through July 31, 2025. IONA Mind is a mental health phone app that delivers low-intensity cognitive behavioral therapy depression intervention that addresses barriers to accessing psychological therapy. Ward’s pilot study will examine feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of decreasing levels of anxiety and depression for head and neck cancer patients and survivors.

The Wisconsin Head and Neck Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) is an NIH-funded collaboration between the UW Department of Human Oncology and the UW Carbone Cancer Center focusing on head and neck cancer translational research. Its Developmental Research Program supports innovative approaches to studying head and neck cancer with the aim of improving overall survival and quality of life for those with this disease.
