Paul Smith, MD (Research) is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Smith graduated with his BA in chemistry from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1979. He received his MD degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio in 1982 and completed his residency training at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency in Augusta, Maine, in 1985. After residency, he joined the Family Practice Department at Health Services Association, a staff model HMO, near Syracuse, New York where he practiced for almost ten years and participated in ASPN, a primary care research network, for nine years. He joined the DFM faculty in October 1995. He provides clinical care and teaches residents one day per week, and spends three days per week in a variety of service and research activities. He is a volunteer on the Board of Directors for Wisconsin Literacy. His interests also include health literacy, electronic medical records and computerized patient interviewing.
